Challenge
Island Health’s Employee Relations and Scheduling Services Team is a driving force behind efficient scheduling processes for those that provide patient care. They spearhead the implementation of new and updated scheduling systems and processes, directly impacting Island Health’s ability to serve its diverse community. This requires influencing and educating a wide array of stakeholders, including busy support staff, clinical leaders, nurses, and other health professionals whose primary focus is on patient care. Recognizing the power of effective communication in driving organizational progress, the team’s leadership is committed to equipping them with the presentation skills needed to effectively influence and inspire.
Solution
Seeking a solution that would develop team members’ ability to engage and influence different audiences throughout the organization, Island Health partnered with The Humphrey Group to deliver Presenting as a Leader™. With three new system updates on the horizon, Presenting as a Leader™ allowed participants to use real-time examples to develop and refine their communications while building new skills and best practices for future communications. Customizing the learning experience around this immediately applicable scenario ensured participants gained practical, tangible skills that would quickly elevate their impact at work. Participants also gained access to 1:1 virtual coaching and ELI, the Humphrey Group’s AI coaching assistant, ensuring ongoing support as learners implement their new skills.
Success
Presenting as a Leader™ equipped participants with more than just presentation skills; it taught them to identify the needs of each audience and leverage this knowledge to engage and inspire listeners. Now, members of the Scheduling Services Quality Improvement and Education Team can focus on the critical information their diverse audiences need to increase engagement and buy-in. Prior to the program, only 10% of participants felt they had an advanced ability to engage audiences and inspire others through presentations. After the program, 83% reported an advanced ability to inspire others through presentations, and 84% achieved an advanced or expert ability to engage audiences. These new skills will drive efficiencies throughout Island Health, enabling the organization to expand its valuable impact on the community.
