Challenge
TD is committed to building an inclusive and supportive work environment that fosters learning, growth, and development for all employees. With various initiatives already in place promoting inclusion and belonging, they aimed to design a leadership development experience tailored specifically for Black, Indigenous, and visible minority leaders and their allies. Additionally, TD wanted to evaluate how community-specific learning environments contribute to employee learning, a sense of belonging, and confidence in taking on new leadership roles. This assessment would guide future investments in similar programs, ensuring effective and impactful development opportunities for these communities.
Solution
The Humphrey Group's Inspiring Leaders program is a purpose-built space for Black, Indigenous, and visible minority leaders and their allies to share their unique challenges, learn from each others’ experiences, and build essential leadership communication skills. We were thrilled to partner with TD to implement this program and measure its effectiveness. Collaborating closely with their Black Experience, Indigenous Peoples, and TD Multicultural Network Executive Steering Committee, we delivered the program to 28 employees across North America. Participants were organized into three cohorts of 8-10 learners each, participating in asynchronous learning, weekly live workshops, and one-on-one coaching sessions. This structure provided ample opportunities to network, receive personalized feedback, and practice their newly acquired skills in a supportive environment. In addition to Inspiring Leaders, participants also engaged in a capstone project where they were given the chance to apply their learning and identify opportunities and recommendations for TD to continue to build a diverse and inclusive culture.
Success
To measure the program’s impact, participants completed pre and post-program surveys and engaged in 30-minute one-on-one live feedback sessions. Through this research, participants highlighted that they valued having a safe, purpose-built space for discussion regarding some of the unique challenges they face day-to-day. Evaluations also revealed that participants built practical communication skills and improved their ability to draw connections between authenticity and leadership. The data further underscored the program’s success as 92% of participants expressed satisfaction with the overall learning experience, and 96% agreed that their leadership development needs were addressed. Additionally, there was a 47% increase in workplace engagement satisfaction. These results reflect TD's dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. By investing in targeted leadership development programs like Inspiring Leaders, TD continues to empower its leaders to thrive and confidently take on new challenges.
